NCCC Oak 3 team helps people in Upper Peninsula

  Oak 3 is working hard to beautify the Upper Peninsula State Fairgrounds in Escanaba, Michigan and get it ready for the State Fair. They are using chainsaws to cut down trees while others carried trees to the wood chipper. They were joined by two men from the Delta County Road Commission who were pleasantly surprised at how fast the team is accomplishing their task.

NCCC Oak 2 members help at Friendship Center in Dodgeville

  AmeriCorps NCCC’s Oak 2 is currently in Dodgeville staying at Friendship Center Camp for six weeks helping with the removal of invasive species such as wild parsnip, garlic mustard, box elder tree, Japanese honeysuckle and prickly ash. They are also assisting with a 400 feet nature trail loop, building a two level flower bed, planting native plant species and fixing picnic tables.

NCCC Oak 2 members help at Science Station Summer Camp, Shellsburg school

The team outside the Science Station.   AmeriCorps NCCC’s Oak 2 is currently working at the Science Station located in the Lindale Mall in Cedar Rapids. They are helping out with a series of summer camps that make science, technology, engineering and math fun and easy to learn.  Since June 8, Oak 2 has worked with about 275 kids in classes such as Storybook Science, Robotics Rules, Safari Science, Junior Vets, Icky Sticky Science, Fitness Fanatics and Math Detectives.

AmeriCorps members help after Mouse River flood in ND

AmeriCorps members based in Vinton helped ND flood victims.   On May 18, 2012, AmeriCorps NCCC team Maple Six, arrived in Minot, North Dakota to assist Lutheran Disaster Response with mucking, gutting, power washing and sanitizing homes that were affected by the June 2011 Mouse River Flood. The team's main priority for this project is to serve the vulnerable population (i.

State fair deadline for parade and many events is July 1

July 1 is the deadline to enter the Iowa State Fair parade and many of the Fair's competitive events - late applications will be accepted with an additional late fee. "Nothing Compares" to the Iowa State Fair, August 9-19. Premium books and entry forms can be accessed at www.iowastatefair.org/premiumbooks. Entrants in competitive events may enter online or submit their entry by mail.

A message about Whooping Cough and Tdap

  Prevention is the key to eliminating the risk of getting whooping cough ( also known as pertussis) in our community. Benton County experienced a sharp rise in the number of cases of whooping cough during the past six months. Whooping cough is very contagious and can lead to serious illness in adults, children and especially infants. Benton County Public Health is asking all citizens to be informed about whooping cough.
